Yum Cha: Tastebuds Shanghai'edMAROOCHYDORE - Amid the myriad scents wafting through the air, drifting with the warm springtime breeze, the distinct aroma of soy sauce, rice and deep-fried batter leaps forth. Instantly, my stomach gurgles.
The Sunshine Plaza’s Riverwalk is home to a cornucopia of cuisine. The avid foodie can entrée with a Mexican platter, feast on Vietnamese then cleanse their palette with Italian gelato. But if craving the flavours of eastern lands, appetites ought to be appeased by Yum Cha Cuisine’s traditional Chinese menu. From portions to platters, Yum Cha Cuisine offers hot plates, hot pots, dumplings and deep-fried delicacies. Customers can opt for traditional Yum Cha dining and order an array of dishes to sate appetites. Alternatively, the restaurant offers stand-alone meals for those craving a substantial plate. The menu provides images of each item, ideal for those who are not accustomed to Asian cuisine. When the waitress brings the bamboo steamer to my table, I can smell the dense aroma of cooked pork before I can even see the food itself. Lifting the lid unleashes a cloud of steam revealing three plump Shanghai-styled pork dumplings. My dexterity with chopsticks is non-existent, evidence of the lack of Asian cuisine in my life. Yet, the atmosphere created by the staff at Yum Cha Cuisine urges me to indulge in Chinese tradition. I eagerly move onto my next dish. A tender portion of chicken breast coated in a crisp skin sits before me, swimming in the acidic lemon-butter sauce. The combination of sour and savoury tantalises the tastebuds. I may not be an expert on Chinese cooking, but I would head back just for another plate. Equipped for the upcoming summer trade, Yum Cha Cuisine provides dining options for those who prefer a warmer alfresco setting while watching the Maroochy river flow below. The restaurant, while having a reasonably fast turnover, does however, garner a queue for tables, so it’s best to book a reservation.
